Durban is the economic hub of Kwa-Zulu Natal, a vibrant and modern city where first would meets third world, East meets West, to create an atmosphere that is uniquely South African.

In one city block you can savour the influences of India, marvel at the rich mysteries of traditional Zulu culture, while all the attractions of a modern city are close at hand. Known as Ethekweni or the “Place of the Bay” in Zulu, the city is situated around the busiest harbour in Africa, with an exciting array of restaurants and bars dotted along its quays.

It was this natural harbour, sheltered behind an impressive headland, that attracted sailors and adventurers who settled here in the early 19th Century. King Shaka had a military barracks and homestead here which was named “Khangela amaKengane” – the place from which to view strangers.
